About this deal

Scott and Frankie go on to take a few risks, make several sacrifices, and discover new truths related to each other’s family and love as their relationship progresses. However, fate had planned something else for them, which comes in the form of a tragic twist and destroy all their hopes. Sometimes it is as mundane as sitting there thinking ‘come on, come on, come on, get ON with it’, and just putting one word after another after another until you crank up momentum and before you know it four hours are up and you've got kids to pick up from school. In my teenage years, I found solace in Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and Judy Blume’s novels, while To Kill A Mockingbird and Flowers for Algernon opened my eyes to justice, humanity and judging people.

But I and my fellow Pigeons loved this book, so huge thanks to Freya and Pigeonhole for allowing us to read this book. Little Wing is a story about resilience, forgiveness and the true meaning of family, about finding one’s place in the world and discovering how we all belong somewhere and to someone. But more than that he almost becomes a fatherly/grandfatherly figure to Nell, something she never had. Florence Lawson, a 16-year-old schoolgirl who dreams of being an artist, finds herself pregnant and banished to one of the most remote parts of the UK. Little Wing gave me an unfiltered look at what matters in our busy lives, the moments of joy amidst the worry and uncertainty. It may only be January, this may only be the third book I’ve read this year, but already it is on my list of Top Reads for 2022. I thought about the phrase mind, body, spirit — and realised I would also benefit from a fourth pillar: mindfulness.

There are also relationships with the land explored in the book and having visited Harris, I found this a particularly well developed strand of the story. My daughter was in night nappies when she started going to school and I WON'T apologise for it - no one. Nell's relationship with her mum Wendy (who had very challenging mental health issues) gave so much more depth to Nell's personality and patience. Nell was overflowing with love and kindness, she had dedicated her life to working with and supporting those who needed it most. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one.Because Dougie and Nell have separate story lines in the beginning it took me a while to feel fully engaged with the story.

I suppose as an author, ultimately, my skill is my imagination,” she says, then muses on alternative occupations. A novel about resilience, forgiveness and the true meaning of family, about finding one's place in the world and discovering how we all belong somewhere and to someone. In fact, more importantly it showed that Nell remembers the good times much more than the harder days. Without DNA technology, it’s more difficult to unravel the past as you question an older generation that might feel the need to keep secrets.

Nell's 'mother', Wendy, is settled in a nursing home suffering from advancing dementia, and her father is out of the picture . Dougie meanwhile, a talented, but unfulfilled photographer of catalogue images, is similarly uninspired by life. But I've taught myself over the 16 books that I can't afford the time to fanny around waiting for inspiration to come.

BOOKS: Freya North on new novel Little Wing and why writing

Nell leads a very spartan life and suddenly a Pandora's box is opened and she finds out she's not who she thinks she is - what would you do with that kind of revelation that most of your life has been a series of, if not lies, then hidden truths? The setting and descriptions of the Outer Hebrides (especially Harris) were stunning, I have a soft spot for this place as half my family are from here so this was wonderful to read.
