About this deal

Food for Life’ empowers readers with practical guidance on how to eat for our own health and the well-being of the planet.

The nutrition revolution is well underway and Tim Spector is one of the visionaries leading the way . To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. So I was surprised it did not mention the 2020 paper “Associations of fat and carbohydrate intake with cardiovascular disease and mortality: prospective cohort study of UK Biobank participants” that shows the optimal amount of macronutrients of sugar, starch, fibre, different type of fats and protein.Tim Spector empfiehlt ernsthaft genmanipulierte Lebensmittel für die Zukunft und kritisiert, dass manche Menschen diese Lebensmittel bedenklich finden!

Empowering and practical, Food for Life is nothing less than a new approach to how to eat - for our health and the health of the planet. The big environmental impact is that we would replace the vast animal facilities of pigs and cattle with huge complexes of industrial bioreactors with wind turbines and solar panels. Most people have too much omega-6, which can increase inflammation and disease, and not enough omega-3. Animal domestication led to a dramatic reduction in the number of wild animals on the planet and as the manure breaks down, it releases gases like methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which add to the problem of climate change. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

Every person's ideal diet is different, and should be based on sensible choices from a position of knowledge. With his expertise as a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology, Spector presents complex scientific concepts in a clear and accessible manner. The organisation of the book is user-friendly, allowing readers to easily find information about specific foods or food groups. Occasionally there will be mentions of his ZOE PREDICT study (which after reading the book I am still not entirely clear on the premise of the study or what "ideal" results might look like) and how his own results have influenced his personal food choices, which is great for him but I am not clear on how those same foods would or should influence my own choices as my body might react differently (I am a woman in my 40's not, like him, a man in my 60's: we have vastly different nutritional needs).

They play a crucial role in maintaining a balanced gut microbiome, which is essential for preventing weight gain and obesity. Food For Life has made me a more conscious consumer with regard to animal welfare, climate change and food fraud. Also on the theme what is the optimal amount of macronutrients, I did not see a reference to the 2017 paper “Food groups and risk of all-cause mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies”. And again, eating non-organic fresh veg that you can afford is better than stressing yourself trying to afford smaller amounts of organic veg and filling up with processed foods.

I have to admit that this book has singlehandedly made me change my eating habits to include more plants.Tim Spector is a renowned Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at Kings College and Director of the TwinsUK Registry, a vast data collection from 11,000 twins. Anyway, the book is quite clearly structured and to summarize the sheer amount of information he puts in, he includes 5 bullet points at the end of each chapter that reiterate the key points. I found it a bit of a slog to get through the book as he goes through every food and their vitamins and polyphenols, which doesn’t make for riveting reading. Of course a lot of the topics covered deal with hard truths about the food industry, climate change and modern food technology and consumption.
