About this deal

Protect skin and eyes and apply in well ventilated areas outdoors, do not inhale. Do not apply near open flames, sparks, heat or hot surfaces. sources. Dispose of any waste responsibly as it is toxic to wildlife. Do not swallow. Would bitumen paint be suitable for protecting the underside of a steel trailer? Bitumen paint is usually long lasting. If applied to a porous surface like masonry it will last longer than when applied to less porous surfaces, especially those subjected to long hours of extremely hot sun.

Bitumen paint can be applied to most types of wood and engineered board such as sterling board and OSB board. However, some OSB has a wax finish which the bitumen paint may struggle to adhere to. If you can remove the wax, all the better, if not, try a test patch first. However, I trialled this a number of years ago, and have since used it on both smooth planed timber fascias and rough sawn wood. Not only does it give a beautiful finish, but there have been no signs of flaking whatsoever, and all that timber is South-facing. Some trellis work which only received a single coat is now showing areas of weathering - but no flaking. A top-up coat can just be slapped on to the secure layer below. For ferrous metal, treat rust, remove any loose or flaking coatings and sand smooth - in these circumstances, we recommend 2 coats of Frenchic Finishing Coat as a base for the paint. The steel will be hot dip galvanized (120 micron) and coated with epoxy paint. However, we intend providing an additional two coats of bitumen paint taken up to 50mm above ground level (tarmac path). We have also been asked what products can be painted over a previously bitumen painted concrete roof. Generally, it is fine to paint a bitumen paint over another bitumen product; if the reason for painting is to change the colour, then consider a bituminous barn paint like Carbolustre or Green bitumen paint. I consider this approach to painting to be similar to that of recommending PVA as a primer coat for an emulsion paint system. You may be storing up future problems. Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions and we recommend application of 2 coats. Use Conventional or HVLP spray, brush or roller. Our bitumen paint products I have looked at several makes of bitumen paint, and there are several which include wood in their list of uses, so it does seem that you can apply bitumen paint to wood in accordance with given instructions.

Usually cheaper than many other coatings offering similar weather proofing performance, it’s an economical option Avoid painting in direct sunlight, only when the air and surface temperatures are between 10 oC and 32 oC and humidity is less than 85%. Do not apply if, in the following 48 hours, there is likelihood of rain, frost, fog, condensation or if the temperature is likely to drop lower than 10 oC. This means that certain times of the year are unsuitable for painting outside projects - as a general rule of thumb Summer is recommended. Also suitable for interior wood, concrete and most laminate floors with correct application – please note that maintenance may be required in these situations. Suited to application on multiple surface types from iron, steel, concrete through to masonry and wood Exterior wooden surfaces in particular can retain moisture for up to 48 hours after rainfall or preparation. Ensure the items are thoroughly dry prior to painting.Ensure surface is in suitable condition for painting and free from grease, wax or penetrating substances. If previously painted, remove loose or flaking paint. Porous, or ‘thirsty’ surfaces like bare wood or MDF, tend to absorb paint meaning additional coats are likely to be required to achieve a durable finish. In this case, your 750ml tin will provide less than 6m 2 of full coverage. If you apply the paint too thinly, durability may be affected. I have just installed a plastic membrane roof and sealed the joints with heat gun . I have painted over the heat sealed joints with bitumen paint for added protection .
